👋 What is this all about?!

2oFB DOOM NetPlay Meetup Advert

The TechHeart Youtube channel hosts a Bulletin Board System named 2o fOr beeRS. You can access it by using SyncTERM - but to learn about BBSes, check out our BBSing in 2o24 video. On Meetup dates, we set a password for the DOOM server… you can find it on the BBS!

The meetup takes place on the 1st Saturday of every month at 6PM PST / 9PM EST, and lasts around an hour and a half!!! Come get some frags with a bunch of retro-computer lovers who still BBS in 2o24… what will you need???

  • Zandronum - A multiplayer port of DOOM and DOOM II

  • DoomSeeker - A cross-platform server browser for DOOM

  • DOOM2.WAD - You need to have the legacy DOOM file in order to play; Zandronum will download our special .PK3 file that customizes the game… some people say you can find .WADs on cool BBSes…

  • Server Password - Only on Meetup times… the server is open to practice all month long w/o password protection

Ok, now you have Zandronum, Doomseeker and your .WADs installed - what next? Just fire up Doomseeker and search for “20 FOR BEERS”. Click on that server and our .pk3 will be downloaded and you’ll join the game!! During the month, we leave two bots in the server and you can sometimes find other real players connected!

In March we played the DWANGO map set - one of the most popular mutliplayer map sets in DOOM history. We change maps for each meetup and hope that you’ll come by and join us for some FRAGS!

You can still find our quirky Tech Heart videos at the TechHeart Youtube Channel!!

More detailed instructionZzZ…

The 2oFB DOOM Deathmatch Server is hosted on a Zandronum-Server and listed on
DoomSeeker. Players will need to have Zandronum and DoomSeeker installed
locally - and have a base set of commercial .WADs [DOOM maps] to start. More
maps will be automatically downloaded thru Doomseeker when needed - does none
of this make sense? Here's more infoz:

Zandronum - A modern DOOM player for Linux, MacOS and Windows. Allows you to
play DOOM .WADs on modern hardware.
DoomSeeker - A front-end for Zandronum [and other software] that lists servers
running DOOM games - DoomSeeker is normally INCLUDED with
Zandronum, but on some platforms [Arch Linux] DoomSeeker needs to
             be installed separately.

INSTALLING ZANDRONUM -

Linux:
Depending on your Linux distribution, there are a few ways to install... we
can use Flatpak on any distro that has flatpak installed; in a terminal, run:

$ flatpak install com.zandronum.Zandronum

We can also download and install right from https://zandronum.com/download .
There are instructions to add an apt repository or download a .deb package.

MacOS:
Download the Installer (Bundled with Doomseeker) from
https://zandronum.com/download . Double-click 'zandronum3.1-macosx.dmg' and
then open the 'Zandronum' drive that was opened. Drag both 'Zandronum' and
'DoomSeeker' to 'Applications' .

Zandronum is available in the Apple App Store, and the brew package manager
but do not include DoomSeeker - they are not recommended because of this.

Windows:
Download the Installer (Bundled with Doomseeker) from
https://zandronum.com/download . Install 'zandronum3.1-win32-installer.exe' .

WADS -

You will need a set of base commercial .WADs - if you don't have original
DOOM / DOOM II .WADs, you can find a set on 2oFB - just search the File
Menu for "ONLINE-DOOM-WADS.ZIP" in all File Areas in the LocalZzZ File
Conference.

We need to add these .WADs to the Zandronum config folder, and add that
folder path to the DoomSeeker front-end.

On Linux, that path is ~/.config/zandronum.

If you installed with Flatpak, that path is
~/.var/app/com.zandronum.Zandronum/.config/zandronum.

If you installed on MacOS, that path is ~/Library/Application
Support/zandronum. (You may need to create it.)

Add your base commercial .WADs, or unzip ONLINE-DOOM-WADS.ZIP in that
directory.

DOOMSEEKER SETUP -

In the DoomSeeker front-end, you need to click on the 'Options' tab and
select 'Configure'. Then, in 'File Paths', click 'Add Empty' and type in the
directory from the last step that contains your DOOM .WADs.

ODDS & ENDS -

Is your Zandronum window TINY? You need to modify the Zandronum options and
select full-screen and/or a different aspect ratio (screen size). The easiest
way I found to do this, with a TINY window that couldn't even be read, is to
modify zandronum.ini directly - this .ini file might be in the same path as
your .WADs, ~/Library/Preferences (MacOS); open it in a text editor, and
modify the line:

fullscreen=false

Change it to 'fullscreen=true' and re-run Zandronum - now you can read the
screen and go into 'Options', 'Set Video Mode' to modify the video mode and
aspect ratio. (This will allow you to make sure on-screen text is large.)

In some instances, Zandronum isn't setup with controls like you are used to -
My CTRL button wasn't mapped to 'fire' and SPACEBAR wasn't mapped to 'open' -
just go into 'Options', 'Customize Controls' and make any changes that you
need.

LET'S FRAG -

Open DoomSeeker, or Zandronum if DoomSeeeker is packaged inside of it, and
search for '20 FOR BEERS Classic Deathmatch Server' - double-click and get
ready to R0CK N R0LL!!
