💾 What’s this BBS stuff?

A BBS, or Bulletin Board System, is a computer server that allows users to exchange messages and files through a terminal program. Users can upload and download software and data, read news and bulletins, and exchange messages with other users through public message boards and sometimes via direct chatting. BBSes were popular from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, before the widespread adoption of the Internet.

Even tho they went away when the Internet came about, there are many BBSes still ran by SysOps who love the platform… and you can ‘dial in’ today!

You’ll just need a terminal software: SyncTERM Netrunner IcyTerm MuffinTerm

And some BBSes to call:

2o fOr beeRS 20ForBeers.com TELNET port 1337
aBSINTHE absinthebbs.net TELNET port 23
Wizard's Rainbow wizardsrainbow.com TELNET port 23
Quantum Wormhole bbs.erb.pw TELNET port 23

When you fire up SyncTERM, you can add a BBS to its directory; you’ll select TELNET as the connection and be sure to add the port in the menu… In Netrunner, you add the port to the address, like this: 20ForBeers.com:1337

After creating a new user on a BBS, many offer SSH connections - on 2oFB, the SSH port is 1338. After you’ve made an account, you can change the directory entries connection to “SSH”, add your username and password and change the port to 1338. Now you’ll connect over SSH which is a more secure protocol - this was never available back in the day over phone lines!!

Have fun reliving, or finding, BBSes in 2o25!!
